{"id":9,"date":"2019-09-01T17:45:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-01T17:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/?page_id=9"},"modified":"2020-06-12T14:51:19","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T06:51:19","slug":"bio-resume","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/?page_id=9","title":{"rendered":"Bio\/Resume"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Bruce Coughran<\/strong> is the Artistic Director of Indra\u2019s Net Theater, and a freelance director in Berkeley, California.\u00a0 He is also a playwright, having written <em>a Time for Hawking<\/em> (2018 Critics Circle Award: Best Production) and <em>The Secret of Life<\/em> (2015 TBA Nomination: Best World Premiere Play in the Bay Area).<\/h5>\n<h5>For Indra\u2019s Net Theater he has directed the 2013 version of Michael Frayn\u2019s <em>Copenhagen<\/em>, a staged reading of <em>In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer<\/em>, starring James Carpenter as Oppenheimer, and the Bay Area premiere of Peter Parnell\u2019s <em>QED<\/em>, starring Jeff Garrett, and the world premiere of Jennifer Blackmer\u2019s <em>Delicate Particle Logic<\/em>,\u00a0 <em>The Secret of Life (<\/em>which he also wrote), <em>Darwin in Malibu<\/em>, <em>Partition (<\/em>about Indian mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan)<em>,<\/em>\u00a0and <em>a Time for Hawking<\/em> (about Stephen Hawking.)\u00a0 These plays have received over a dozen TBA Award and Critics Circle Award nominations, and a Broadway West Award nomination.\u00a0 <em>\u00a0a Time for Hawking<\/em> was awarded the Critics Circle Award for Best Overall Production in the East Bay for 2018.\u00a0 In 2019 he directed the US Premiere of the updated (2018) version of Michael Frayn&#8217;s <em>Copenhagen<\/em>, which won 3 Critics Circle Awards including Best Overall Production in the Entire Bay Area (under 100 seats).<\/h5>\n<h6>In addition he has directed Brecht\u2019s <em>Life of Galileo <\/em>at Masquers Playhouse<em>,\u00a0 Antigone <\/em>(by Jean Anouilh) at Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, <em>Bad Connections<\/em> (world premiere) West Valley College,\u00a0<em>Hickory Miles<\/em> at Novato Theatre Company (world premiere), and the world premiere musicals <em>A Hot Day in Ephesus <\/em>and <em>What Women Want: The Marriage of Sir Gawain<\/em>.<\/h6>\n<h6>Before coming to the Bay Area he directed plays in Southern California at The Bitter Truth Playhouse, Playhouse West, The Larry Moss Studio, San Diego Actors Festival, and the world premiere of <em>D\u00e9nouement<\/em> (starring Richard Herd and Ethan Phillips) at First Stage LA. \u00a0Bruce has also directed dozens of staged readings in the Bay Area, including Shakespeare, new plays, new musicals, and contemporary classics.<\/h6>\n<h6>Bruce directed four short films, including the 2013 PlayGround film \u2018Undone\u2019, and produced an award-winning feature film called \u2018East of Sunset\u2019 (2005) (Awards: Best Actress, MethodFest 2005; Maverick Award for Quality in a Low Budget Film), and wrote several screenplays.\u00a0 \u00a0He studied at UCLA film school, AFI, and at Playhouse West (with Robert Carnagie and Jeff Goldblum),\u00a0 as well as privately with writer\/directors Sydney Pollack, Ted Post, and Danny Simon.<\/h6>\n<h6>In addition to his work in theater and film, Bruce has degrees in Biology (BA UCSD), History (MA CSU Dominguez Hills), and Arranging and Composition (Grove School of Music).<\/h6>\n<h6>He is a member of Directors Lab West and Directors Lab Chicago, recipient of a SDC Observership, a TBA ATLAS fellow, and a Titan award finalist.\u00a0 He is a proud member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.<\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bruce Coughran is the Artistic Director of Indra\u2019s Net Theater, and a freelance director in Berkeley, California.\u00a0 He is also a playwright, having written a Time for Hawking (2018 Critics Circle Award: Best Production) and The Secret of Life (2015 &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/?page_id=9\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-9","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/9","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=9"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/9\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":241,"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/9\/revisions\/241"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brucecoughran.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=9"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
